FAWETZ demonstrates interventions by setting model centres (FAWE Centres of Excellence-COEs) and establishing school programmes through implementation of girls’ best practices.
The COE intervention package includes: Tuseme empowerment, Bursary support, Life Skills, Guidance and Counseling, Gender Responsive Pedagogy (GRP) and Science Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM).
There are 3 FAWETZ COEs namely Mgugu Secondary-Kilosa (Morogoro), J.J.Mungai Secondary-Mafinga (Iringa) and Lufilyo-Tukuyu (Mbeya).
The COE package includes: Training of teachers in Gender Responsive; Tuseme empowerment including gender sensitization of boys and girls; Bursary support for needy girls; Guidance and Counseling services; Gender sensitization of school management and community to ensure their full participation and involvement; Capacity building of teachers at all levels, management, support staff and students in peer education and support; and Science, Mathematics & Technology programs.
The chapter has so far supported more than 3,000 girls (since year 2000) who are in different employment levels and others are still in various colleges and universities. The experience to date indicates that the infusion of resources and changes in attitudes embodied in the COE concept yield outstanding results.
Both girls and boys who are educated in COEs are articulate, dynamic and thoughtful with potential to make the most of their own lives and take their rightful place in the development of the country.
